How to start homeschooling in Arizona

Instruction must include reading, grammar, math, social studies and science, but the state does not require testing, set hours or require teacher qualifications. Homeschooled children may try out for interscholastic activities at their local public school.

  1. Choose your homeschooling option

Homeschool. A parent, guardian or custodian teaches the child at home under § 15-802 after filing the county affidavit.

Delayed start to age 8. If the child is not yet 8 by September 1, the custodian may file an affidavit saying homeschool instruction will not begin until the child turns 8.

  2. Prepare your notice

An affidavit giving the child's name and date of birth, the current address of the school the child attends, and the names, phone numbers and addresses of the custodians. County offices ask for it to be notarized with proof of the child's identity, such as a certified birth certificate.
